The new village centre will consist of the converted listed buildings and associated open spaces, and acts as the focal point of the new community. It is intended that the existing roundel immediately in front of the Administration Block is retained and possibly enhanced as the Village Green, with provision made for people to meet and sit, or for children to play. |

Unquestionably the most important individual buildings are those contained within the central area, being predominantly in French Renaissance style with Scottish Baronial details. Red sandstone is the predominant building material, with slate roofs and timber, astragalled windows. There are numerous attractive details and features both within the buildings and on the facades, such as decorative chimneystacks, crow step gables and pedimented dormerheads. The core consists of the asylum section and the hospital section. Of the former, the three storey administration block is the most imposing of the grouping, with its twin water towers a visual landmark for the surrounding countryside. |
